BTO Etching
About Huawei’s Caliopa department
Caliopa was established in 2010 as a spin-off from uGent and IMEC bringing 15 years of research in the field of silicon photonics integrated circuits to market. In 2013 Caliopa was acquired by Huawei Technologies. Our R&D is focused on silicon photonics for high speed transceivers, as well as LIDAR, neuromorphic computing and multi-wavelength sources, where integrated photonics plays a key role as enabling technology.
Internship topic
Barium Titanate (BTO) etching is a crucial process in the development of advanced photonic devices due to its excellent electro-optic properties, which are essential for high-performance modulators and other photonic components.
The target of the internship is to develop and optimize BTO etching processes for Silicon Photonics applications. You will perform experiments to determine the optimal etching parameters such as etchant composition, temperature, and time, and analyze the results using techniques like Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) to evaluate etch depth, uniformity, and surface roughness. Based on your experimental results, we will fabricate photonic structures, which will later be manufactured in a manufacturing environment and tested in our photonics lab.
This internship will allow you to work in an international team of design, process, and test experts, providing you with insights into our daily R&D work and the potential future applications of BTO in Silicon Photonics.
